A drive-by shooting at the funeral of a gun violence victim has left 15 people hospitalized in Chicago. A black car pulled up to the funeral home, in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, and one of the passengers fired multiple shots at attendees. The funeral-goers fired back, causing the vehicle to drive away. The car crashed halfway up the block and the occupants quickly dashed out of the vehicle in several directions. At least 60 shell casings were recovered from the scene. Nine of the victims were heavily injured. The fire department claimed it wasn’t clear how many of those injured were from the vehicle or funeral. At least one person left fighting for their life was a bystander who got caught in the crossfire whilst taking a cigarette break. The ambush was reportedly planned, and local police had been warned there could be retaliation from those attending the service. That’s why a squad car had been assigned to patrol the vicinity of the funeral parlor. The funeral was for Donnie Weathersby, who was shot and killed on July 14. The shooting comes as President Trump asked 175 federal agents to go to Chicago to help deal with the city’s ongoing problem with gun violence.
