Zimbabweans have accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa of using the pandemic to make a power grab. Large-scale protests planned for July 31 have been banned, officially due to coronavirus precautions. Opposition figures, however, say oppression is on the rise, with around 60 activists arrested since January. Meanwhile, journalist Hopewell Chin’ono, was arrested and remains detained after reporting on corruption linked to coronavirus procurement contracts.
