Engulfed by Sahara | The Desertification of Sudan

This Sudanese village is slowly being engulfed by the Sahara Desert. A slow and silent process, families living here have had their livelihoods hugely disrupted by desertification. Sand blowing in from the north has gradually buried homes and roads over the last 20 years. Consequently, this has had a detrimental impact on jobs, food security and the locals’ health. Sudan has asked for a delay in tripartite negotiations over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which could negatively affect desertification. However, one of the main contributors to desertification is believed to be deforestation. Large natural forests have been increasingly made into agricultural areas since the 1940s. Studies suggest that, if this continues, in 50 years there won’t be a single tree left in Sudan.
