Thousands rally against Charlie Hebdo in Pakistan

Thousands of Jamat-e-Islami (JI) supporters gathered in Peshawar on Sunday to protest against Charlie Hebdo. The French satirical magazine had republished the controversial cartoons from 2015, poking fun at the Prophet Muhammad, which led to the horrific attacks on the magazine’s office and a kosher supermarket and the deaths of 17 people. The crowds were at a ‘Finality of Prophethood’ rally where JI leader Siraj ul Haq addressed protesters. ‘We must find the reason why the honor of our kind prophet and his companions is being attacked,’ he said. The cartoons were reprinted to mark the start of the trial of 14 suspects believed to be behind the attacks, three of whom – who either fled or are presumed dead – are being tried in absentia.
