She was the first woman to direct a major American orchestra. Today Marin Alsop conducts in Vienna, Baltimore and São Paulo and is an invited artist in cultural centres around the world. She’s also on the jury of a new exclusively female competition here in Paris, “La Maestra”, which seeks to celebrate and promote the star conductors of tomorrow. Marin tells us more about the wide-ranging skillset a conductor must maintain, why a good mentor is hard to find and why the arts are a necessary space for social and political debate.
