Another day, another pick | Biden assigns as defence secretary general who led fight against ISIS

In his latest move, presumed US President-elect Joe Biden has chosen a retired general, 67-year-old Lloyd Austin, as his defence secretary. Yet there’s an obstacle: according to US law, an officer must have left the service at least seven years before becoming secretary of defence, and Austin retired only four years ago.
