US regulator begins inquiry into data collection by tech firms

The United States Federal Trade Commission has ordered nine major social media and streaming services to hand over information about how they collect and use personal data from their users. The platforms concerned include Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok and Amazon’s Twitch. This inquiry comes as the European Commission prepares to unveil its new draft regulations for the technology industry. Also today, Pinterest agrees a $22.5 million settlement with its former Chief Operation Officer, who accused the company of gender discrimination.
