Police used water cannons on protesters during a commemorative tribute gathering to a victim of police violence in Santiago. Mauricio Fredes died at the age of 33 on December 27 2019, when he fell head first into a water-filled pit containing electrical cables as he was attempting to escape from a pursuing police vehicle during a protest. As a result of the protests, Chile voted for a new constitution in a referendum in October, which saw an approval rate of 78%.
