Hindus pierce cheeks and skin in religious ritual

Hindu devotees celebrating the Thaipusam festival in Chennai were seen having their cheeks pierced with long skewers and hooks stuck into their chests and backs. The festival is a day of thanksgiving and of paying penance. Hindus believe that taking part in the ritual will cleanse them of their sins. It is celebrated in many countries including Indonesia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
