FSB analyst: Russian security services did nothing to stop Wagner | Conflict Zone

Since Yevgeny Prigozhin fled Russia, speculation has continued about what Vladimir Putin will do next and what threats his regime may face. The head of the Wagner mercenary group’s “March for Justice” may have turned back before it reached Moscow, but the repercussions are still being felt, according to sources within Russian security services. Russian investigative journalist Andrei Soldatov has sources within the intelligence services. He says the Russian army’s “wait and see” approach during the Wagner mutiny has unsettled power holders within the apparatus. “The biggest threat is not Prigozhin per se, but the reaction of the army and the security services,” Soldatov told DW’s Sarah Kelly. “The people who were put in charge of providing political stability for Putin’s regime did absolutely nothing” when Wagner mercenaries took over the military headquarters in Russia’s southern city of Rostov-on-Don. Prigozhin has reportedly fled to sanctuary in Belarus despite a pledge of amnesty from Putin. But how big of a threat remains and what will happen next? “Putin is really good at conducting repressions,” Soldatov said.
