Evacuation of French and other EU citizens from Niger under way

August 2, 2023

Niger has reopened its land and air borders with Algeria, Burkina Faso, Mali, Libya and Chad, as evacuations of French and other EU citizens continue. Foreign citizens first began leaving the country on Tuesday night, after a military take-over a week ago. Defence chiefs of the West African economic bloc ECOWAS are holding a two-day meeting to discuss the situation.
