Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest hospital in Gaza, said it ceased operations on Saturday after running out of fuel and electricity as the Israeli army continues to lay siege to it. “It’s continous bombardment for more than 24 hours now,” says Ahmed El Mokhallalati, a senior plastic surgeon at the hospital. “It’s totally a war zone. It’s a totally scary atmosphere in the hospital.” While most patients have left, there continues to be 500 patients in the hospital being looked after by a skeleton staff. The Israli military says it is involved in clashes nearby with Hamas militants and that the hospital remains vulnerable to attack as it says that Hamas has installed command centres underneath it.
