Russia is tightening its repression of the LGBTQ community. A new law that will soon come into force effectively categorizes symbols and information that are not heterosexual as extremist. As DW’s Jennifer Pahlke reports, those who break it could face big fines and long jail sentences.

During a raid in the gay club “Fame”, the police seized nine liters of unlabeled strong alcohol, checked 100 visitors and copied their documents, the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported. The police said it was a “preventive” raid and carried out “according to reports from concerned citizens”. Other LGBTQ sites were forced to close under the new ruling.
