US president Joe Biden has congratulated Guatemala’s new president on his inauguration. Vice President Kamala Harris also said she’ll be hosting Bernardo Arevalo in Washington in the coming months. President Arevalo took the oath of office in Guatemala City in the early hours of Monday. The ceremony was delayed after last ditch attempts by opponents to prevent him taking office. Mr Arevalo won a surprise election victory in August, running on an anti-corruption ticket. He faced numerous attempts to prevent him taking office, including from public prosecutors who tried to overturn the election result.
