- Kachin Independence Army (KIA) shoots down Myanmar junta regime’s fighter jet 16 January 2024 The Kachin Independence Army (KIA), an ethnic armed group fighting for democracy and federalism in Myanmar, has shot down a fighter jet belonging to the Myanmar junta regime. This incident took place today at 12:45 pm [Myanmar time]. According to a credible source, KIA’s Air Defense Unit was primarily responsible for taking down the jet. Brigade 4 of KIA for its southern regiment captured the Nam Hpar Kar police station and the junta military outpost of Light Infantry Battalion – 45 on 29 December 2023, launching an offensive against the remnants of Light Infantry Battalion 123. Due to the junta regime’s cutting off the telecommunication line since the fighting in the region was intensified, the images of the fighter jet shot down are yet to be revealed. This strike marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict between the junta regime and ethnic armed groups in Myanmar. This is the second time this month that the KIA has managed to shoot down a junta regime aircraft. Previously, on January 3rd, KIA shot down a junta attack helicopter near Laiza, the headquarter of the KIA/KIO. This demonstrates the remarkable capabilities of KIA’s air defense units, which remain unmatched by any other ethnic armed group in the country. The ability of KIA to shoot down junta regime fighter jets and attack helicopters highlights the strategic advantage they hold in this conflict. The junta regime’s aircraft are often used to launch airstrikes against rebel strongholds, causing significant civilian casualties. However, with KIA’s air defense capabilities, the military junta’s aerial assaults have become less effective and vulnerable.
