HMRC is being accused of ruthlessly pursuing people who were paid wages through so-called “loan schemes” that were supposed to pay tax on their behalf. It comes back to a 2016 piece of legislation that made individuals responsible for tax that their employers should have paid, and has been linked to 10 suicides.
