MPs have warned that extreme heat will prove a “silent killer” if the UK doesn’t act. According to the Office for National Statistics, there were an estimated 4,500 heat-related deaths in 2022. However, the MPs’ report says the annual rate could rise to 10,000 by 2050 without intervention.
