Israel’s War Cabinet, on Saturday, approved sending a delegation of negotiators to Qatar to continue talks aimed at securing a hostage-release deal and possible cease-fire, officials said. Local media reported that the government had approved a plan to send a delegation to Qatar in the coming days. The objective of this delegation would be to continue negotiations on a weeks-long truce and the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israel. Pressure on Netanyahu and his government has been growing to strike a deal to free the hostages. Thousands have been gathering in Tel Aviv at what has come to be known as “Hostages Square” to demand swifter action.
Just the Facts (more below this including clips from all sides)
- Israel and Hamas are considering a six-week pause in hostilities, during which all civilian hostages in Gaza could be released after 117 days.
- The proposed deal, crafted by US, Egyptian, and Qatari negotiators, involves a three-stage plan where Israel would first stop its military actions in Gaza to allow Hamas to assemble its hostages.
- Hamas is expected to release all civilian hostages, with priority given to children, women, the elderly, and those requiring medical care.
- The initial phase also entails Hamas releasing the remains of the 27 hostages presumed deceased. Excluding these, Israel counts 109 hostages held by Hamas.
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking on “Face the Nation,” reiterated his stance against a ceasefire, arguing it would postpone Israel’s strategic operations in Rafah, southern Gaza Strip.
- Netanyahu emphasized the importance of total victory over Hamas to ensure the release of hostages and secure Gaza as a non-threat, which he views as crucial for peace in the Middle East.
- Despite the potential for a ceasefire to aid in the return of hostages, Netanyahu maintained that a decisive victory was imminent and would not be compromised.
- The Prime Minister mentioned ongoing IDF efforts to dismantle Hamas’s military infrastructure and plans to safely relocate civilians from Rafah before initiating further operations.
- Netanyahu assured that the relocation of the 1.4 million Gazans in Rafah would be towards the north, avoiding areas with heavy conflict.
- Despite widespread protests, Netanyahu claimed that the Israeli public supports him, pointing to political backing within the Knesset for his Gaza strategy.
Two decades ago Israel left Gaza and gave you full autonomy. With billions in foreign aid, you could have turned it into Dubai. Instead, you spent it all on terror tunnels and weapons. You celebrated massacre and kidnapping. Zero sympathy for you!
