The EU’s headquarters in Brussels have been surrounded by hundreds of tractors as farmers renew their protests over regulations and rising costs in the industry. Police deployed water cannon as the demonstration became increasingly fraught, with some protesters setting off fireworks in the street, smashing glass bottles and throwing eggs. Farmers have held a series of protests across Europe in recent weeks, with the latest one timed to coincide with a meeting of the bloc’s agriculture ministers.
