Why thousands of farmers keep rallying in India | DW News

With nearly two-thirds of Indians dependent on farming for their livelihood, farmers and agricultural workers form a big part of the Indian population. Currently, thousands of them are camping out some miles away from New Delhi, ready to march to the capital. Their main demand is a minimum guaranteed price for all their produce – and their protest may well pose the biggest election challenge for the country’s powerful Prime Minister Narendra Modi. For now, heavy security forces and barbed wires are stopping the farmers from marching to the capital city. But they are determined to stay put, miles away from their homes and families. For them they say, it is a matter of survival. DW correspondent Manira Chaudhary went to one of the protest camps to feel the pulse.
