Some 2.4 million migrants illegally crossed from Mexico into the United States in 2023, creating a political divide between Democrats and Republicans as the country grapples with how to process and shelter new arrivals. Since 2022, New York has scrambled to house more than 180,000 migrants, including thousands bused there by the Republican governor of Texas. But the city’s Democratic mayor, Eric Adams, has warned that space is running out and some new arrivals are now being sheltered in tents on a disused airfield where, with the skyscrapers of Manahattan in sight, they must battle cold and isolation.
