Sudan civil war a ‘humanitarian nightmare’, says UN | BBC News

Sudan’s civil war has plunged the country into “one of the worst humanitarian nightmares in recent history”, according to UN officials who met this week to discuss the situation. For nearly a year, Sudan’s military and its former ally, the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group, have been battling over the country’s capital, Khartoum, and other nearby cities. Civilians caught up in the recent fighting have given graphic accounts to the BBC of rape, ethnic violence and street executions. At least 14,000 people have been killed so far.
