German soldiers have arrived in Lithuania as NATO allies seek to shore up the alliance’s Eastern flank. The troops are part of Germany’s first permanent deployment abroad since the end of the second world war. It’s a major shift which was sparked by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Around 5,000 soldiers will be stationed in Lithuania, with the brigade expected to be fully operational in three years time.
