The United States has pledged to uphold mutual defense agreements with the Philippines and Japan, in the face of growing military assertiveness by China. Joe Biden made the promise during a historic first trilateral summit with Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Junior and Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida at the White House. Beijing has made territorial claims on disputed waters in the South and East China Seas with both the Philippines and Japan.
