Ecuadorans are set to vote in a referendum Sunday on tougher measures to fight gang-related crime as the country witnesses a sudden surge in violence that has seen two mayors killed just this week. Former Ecuadoran foreign minister Guillaume Long said his country has seen an 8-fold increase in homicide rates from 2017 to 2023. “By the end of Correa’s presidency in 2017, Ecuador had under 6 homicides per 100,000 people, that was one of the lowest in the region … in 2023, Ecuador has one of the highest homicide rates within the region: 46 homicides per 100,000,” Long said.
