Thailand is well on its way to becoming the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. The most important hurdle, a vote in the lower house of parliament, was cleared in March. The bill must now be approved by the Senate and signed by the King before it comes into force. The bill was supported by all major parties and is an important step in building the country’s reputation as one of the region’s friendliest countries towards gays, lesbians and transgender people. But even once this bill becomes law, there are more challenges to come.
