Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi has been killed in a helicopter crash, state media has confirmed.
The helicopter reportedly got into difficulties in heavy fog in the north of the country on Sunday before crashing; killing the president, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and several others.
Raisi, a hardline cleric close to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was heading to the city of Tabriz, in the north-west of the country, after returning from a dam opening ceremony.
An election for a new president is now set to take place in the next 50 days.
