India is in the home stretch of the biggest election in world history. Nearly one billion people are eligible to cast their ballots. Incumbent prime minister Narendra Modi is bidding for a third term. India’s economic success story is at the center of much of his campaign: Modi is promising to catapult the country into the top three biggest economies in the world. At the same time, inequality in India is skyrocketing. Swati Narayan, author of ‘Unequal: Why India Lags behind Its Neighbours’, speaks to DW about Modi’s economic campaign promises.
