Rob Burrow has been described as "determined and tenacious" who did a "phenomenal" amount to raise money and awareness of motor neurone disease.
Tanya Curry, who is the Chief Executive of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, told Sky News his "twinkly eyes would light up a room" and he was "so strong" in dealing with the disease.
She estimates the former rugby league player raised at least £15m for charity but said that is nothing compared to how much he raised the profile of motor neurone disease.
