The International Energy Agency has warned that the extraction of fuels used for cooking threaten 110 million hectares of forest around the world. In Africa, this happens because many households use charcoal, which is made by heating wood at high temperatures. A Senegalese association called Nebeday has spent ten years promoting an alternative – a sort of organic charcoal made from straw, which is far more energy efficient.
