Christoph Heusgen, Chair of the Munich Security Conference, told DW in a wide-ranging sit-down interview in Washington during the Nato summit that Ukraine should have the ability to deploy long-range missiles on Russian territory to defend itself.
He told DW’s Washington Bureau Chief Ines Pohl: “As long as Ukraine strikes military targets as it is a victim of an aggression by Russia, it is, according to international law, absolutely legal […] Not only on the border region. He should be able to defend his country every day.”
Regarding Putin’s attack on the Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital in Ukraine just a day before the NATO summit Heusgen said: “I think that Putin is laughing about us, that we still refrain Zelensky from defending his country the way he should be."
When asked about the consequences about the debate about Biden’s fitness he said: "The world looks at the US and to have this debate right now is not helpful. We need a strong US leadership. And right now we have this unfortunate discussion internally. I just hope that this discussion will soon be ended. So the sooner the question is resolved, the better.”
Asked about a possible second Trump presidency, he said: “I belong to those who refuse to speculate there. There is one thing which is clear from the from the time that President Trump was in office, and that is you cannot calculate what he does. So he can do one thing one day, another thing the other day. Now, to think what Trump will do, I think this is pure speculation. What we need to do is to concentrate on us.
On the Hungarian President Victor Orban, who met recently with President Vladimir Putin, Heusgen said: “Orban is a clown who runs around. And we let him do [so]. It is unacceptable that Hungary is one of the largest beneficiaries of the European Union, of the internal market, of all the funds also go there. And then on the other hand, from morning to night, he undercuts European unity.”
