A government plan to alleviate overcrowding by releasing prisoners who have served 40% of their sentence has been criticised by pressure groups and the relatives of victims.
Rob Freckleton, whose son Oliver was fatally stabbed at a house party in Burton-upon-Trent in 2021, says he is "angry" about the proposals as they focus more on the feelings of the criminals than those of the victims.
One person was convicted of Oliver’s murder – and three were convicted of manslaughter – but less than three years after the 19-year-old’s death, one of his killers has already been released from jail.
