A former director of public prosecutions has warned that the UK could be facing "criminal justice meltdown" if the government does not take action over prison overcrowding.
Speaking on Sky’s Politics Hub programme, Lord Macdonald said: "This is a catastrophic failure of public policy that’s been in the making for many, many years, over many governments."
He added that he thinks the justice secretary’s plan to reduce overcrowding by releasing some prisoners after they have served 40% of their sentence is "completely warranted".
