Paris’s mayor Anne Hidalgo has swam in the River Seine in a bid to show the water is clean enough for Olympic events.
Three Olympic and Paralympic events are set to be held in the Seine, including the triathlon, marathon swimming and Para-triathlon – though concerns were raised previously about the safety of the water.
Swimming in the Seine has been banned for a century because of the filthy water, caused by upstream industrial sewage and sanitation demands.
City swimming is set to be one of the major legacies of this summer’s Olympic Games in France, with three open-air swimming areas set to be accessible from the quayside by 2025.
