On August 24, 1991, the Ukrainian parliament, the Rada, voted for independence, an approval that was confirmed in a referendum months later by an overwhelming majority of Ukrainians. For a while, there was a debate on whether Independence Day should be marked on the date of the referendum or the parliamentary vote. Reporting from Kyiv, FRANCE 24’s Gulliver Cragg notes that many Ukrainians feel that “the moment of their real, true independence is now with this war, because clearly Russia was not willing to let go of its influence over Ukraine".
