- Woah!! A potential strike by the International Longshoremen’s Association could start on Tuesday, Oct 1, affecting 68% of our exports and 56% of imports. This could lead to empty store shelves, as each strike day requires six days to recover. The dockworkers, whose contracts expire Sept 30, are seeking higher wages and job security against automation. The last strike was in 1977, before our heavy reliance on imports. With a $36 billion food trade deficit and high inflation, this could become a crisis during the election and holiday season. Retailers are preparing, and it’s wise to do the same.
