Ziad Abu Hlail, a prominent Palestinian figure, was killed during an Israeli raid on his home to arrest one of his sons in his hometown of Dura, south of Hebron in the occupied West Bank. He was often seen confronting Israeli forces in videos posted on social media of him preventing soldiers from firing at or arresting young Palestinians.
The family of 66-year-old Abu Hlail said that Israeli forces stormed his home during an overnight raid, causing him to fall when he went to check on his detained son.
He lost consciousness and died at his home before an ambulance could take him to a hospital, according to his wife Basma Abu Hlail.
“We were asleep, at 4:00 am, the (Israeli) forces surrounded the house and arrested my son, they took him out of the house. His father wanted to run after him, they didn’t let him. They pushed the door, he fell and died. He became a martyr. We called the ambulance and it didn’t arrive. God took his soul when he was at home, the ambulance didn’t take him to hospital,” his wife said.
