German lawmakers have approved new measures to improve domestic security and get tougher on immigration. They come in response to several suspected Islamist attacks, and mounting support for anti-migrant policies. The new laws, presented by the ruling coalition parties, include a general ban on knives at public events, and restrictions on benefits for asylum seekers who are obliged to leave the E-U. But a proposal to expand police powers and allow the use of facial recognition technology failed to pass Germany’s upper house.
