Kemi Badenoch has beaten her rival Robert Jenrick by more than 12,000 votes, in an electorate made of grassroot Tory members.
However the turnout was low and the margins were slim. Ms Badenoch clocked up 56.5% of the vote against Mr Jenrick’s 43.5%, making it the closest result of any Tory leadership race ever.
Her often divisive ways have split Conservatives, but now her job as leader is to untie a broken party.
