Moldovans on Sunday cast their votes in a decisive presidential runoff that pitted pro-Western incumbent Maia Sandu against a Russia-friendly opponent, as ongoing claims of voter fraud, electoral interference, and intimidation threaten democracy in the European Union candidate country. Maria Gert-Niculescu, FRANCE 24’s correspondent in Chisinau, said many voters see the election as “a choice between East and West” and explained why Russia is being accused of meddling.
