While voters are going to the polls to pick a new president, under the US electoral system the candidate with the most votes won’t necessarily be the one who wins the White House.
That’s thanks to the Electoral College, which means that if a candidate wins the vote in a handful of states where the races are tight, they can win the presidency, even if they don’t have the most votes nationally.
It’s happened only five times in American history, but two of those times were in the last 25 years, with Republican candidate Donald Trump the latest to do it in 2016.
And polls indicate it could happen again this after this Tuesday’s election.
