In this moving interview, medical doctor and activist Fowzia Siddiqui discusses the 2003 abduction of her beloved sister and compassionate neuroscientist, Aafia Siddiqui. This occurred in Pakistan by those working in league with the American government. It wouldn’t be till years later that Fowzia learned where her sister was being unjustly incarcerated on false terrorism-related charges, seemingly as part of the United States’ post-9/11 outsized persecution of Muslims.
In Aafia’s case and as Fowzia illuminates in troubling detail, this involved physical and emotional abuse, torture and other appalling mistreatment at the hands of various government officials, yet to be held accountable. Though Aafia, whose health has been seriously compromised since her abduction, remains incarcerated, Fowzia continues to tirelessly fight for her release and offers ways the international community can, in solidarity with her, effectively partake in the same struggle.
