Ukraine has for the first time fired US-made ATACMS missiles into Russia. This comes shortly after the US reportedly lifted some restrictions on their use.
Video has emerged which is said to show the ballistic missiles being fired from inside Ukraine toward Russia. Washington had previously only allowed Ukraine to target Russian forces inside Ukraine’s borders.
Sources inside Ukraine and Russia said the missiles were used to strike a military arsenal more than 100 kilometers into the Bryansk region of western Russia.
Russia condemned the strike as an escalation of the war, insisting that Ukraine couldn’t use ATACMS without the active assistance of the US military. Moscow has threatened what it called an ‘appropriate response.’
The strikes come on the day that Russia published its new doctrine for the use of nuclear weapons. The new doctrine allows for a Russian nuclear response to a conventional attack by any country supported by a nuclear power. Washington described the change as irresponsible. European capitals including Berlin said they would not bow to Russian pressure. And marking a thousand days into Russia’s full scale invasion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the implied threat.
