Israel’s ambassador to Washington says a ceasefire deal to end fighting with Hezbollah in Lebanon could be close. The Iran-backed militant group started launching rockets at Israel in October last year, following Hamas’s terror attack on Israel.
Beirut has taken heavy fire this morning. Recently released images show explosions in the city’s south. Fighting escalated into all-out war in September, with the Israeli military conducting a massive campaign of air strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, as well as a ground invasion.
Now, the parties appear to be on the verge of an agreement to end the conflict, with the Israeli security cabinet meeting later to vote on the cease-fire deal. Lebanon’s foreign minister says he hopes the deal will be agreed by tonight.
