The assisted dying bill, put forward by Labour MP Kim Leadbeater, has passed its second reading in the Commons with a majority of 55 – with 330 votes in favour and 275 against.
A huge chunk of those who voted for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill are Labour MPs, including the prime minister, home secretary and chancellor – although, notably, the health secretary voted against.
The bill will now go to a committee for examination before being passed back to the Commons with any amendments. If it is passed again at that stage, it will go to the Lords where the process will be repeated.
