During the COVID-19 pandemic, Germany’s Health Ministry procured 5.7 billion masks at a cost of €5.9 billion, despite the demand being significantly lower. More than two-thirds of the masks were never used. According to reports, the government now plans to distribute millions of surplus masks for free.
