Mayotte hasn’t seen a cyclone of this intensity since 1934. It hit the island as a category 4 and reached category 5 at its peak intensity, with winds of over 226 km/h and waves over 6 meters high, damaging houses, government buildings, hospitals, and infrastructure. It was the strongest storm in more than 90 years to hit the island.
According to meteorologists, it started out as a relatively small cyclone north of Madagascar and then quickly intensified before reaching the archipelago of Mayotte. The eye of the cyclone passed through the island, following an unusual trajectory.
Hear Mikaa Bluegeon-Mered, adjunct lecturer on hydrogen and overseas territories’ geopolitics at Sciences Po, discuss why this is a once-in-a-century phenomenon, especially for Mayotte.
