The Financial Times uncovered evidence of unusual money transfers from Damascus to Russia — one of the most important destinations for Syria’s cash.
According to the report former Syrian dictator Bashar Assad was airlifting money from the country’s central bank to Russia in bulk. Assad moved $250 million in cash to Moscow on 21 separate flights out of Damascus between March 2018 and September 2019. That’s a total of 2 tons of hard cash, consisting of €500 and $100 bills. The money was delivered to the Russian Financial Corporation bank in Moscow, a Russian lender controlled by Rosoboronexport, the Russian state arms export company. The FT also reports that between 2013 and 2019 Assad’s family bought at least 20 luxury apartments worth about $40 million in Moscow’s luxury skyscraper complexes.
