Oil giant Shell is set to end nearly a century of onshore oil and gas production in Nigeria. Abuja has green lit Shell’s 2.4-billion-dollar asset sale to local buyers the Renaissance Group, part of a trend of energy multinationals scaling back or exiting Nigeria. But the move is a worry for campaigners wanting some accountability from big companies pulling out after running profitable operations that have also caused decades of environmental and other damage. Kathryn Nwajiaku-Dahou, Politics and Governance programme director at the ODI Global thinktank, explains.
