Former US President Jimmy Carter has passed away in hospice care in his home town of Plains, Georgia at the age of 100. In a post on X, the Carter Center said that Jimmy Carter died peacefully, surrounded by his family. The former US president governed amid Cold War pressures, turbulent oil markets and social upheaval over racism, women’s rights and America’s global role.
His achievements in office included brokering a landmark peace treaty between Israel and Egypt in 1978 known as the Camp David Accords. For that he would later win the Nobel Peace Prize. That Camp David experience inspired the post-presidential center where Carter would establish so much of his legacy, largely shaped by his work after leaving the presidency in 1981.
He was the first US president to live to be a 100 years old.
